Offensive Profile: Dangerous Shooter

Peterson’s physical tools — standing 6-foot-6 with a projected 7-foot wingspan — mirror those of some of the best scoring two-guards in NBA history.

Comfortable as a ballhandler, Peterson can knock down shots off the dribble, off movement or as a spot-up shooter. Combined with his proven pedigree as an elite offensive weapon, the Ohio native profiles as a relatively safe bet to become a high-impact scorer at the next level.

While Peterson attacked the rim far more often in high school, his three-point shooting numbers at Kansas jumped off the screen, highlighting his upside as a true three-level scorer.

The guard scored 20 or more points in 12 of his 24 college games and was never held to single digits.

Peterson made multiple 3-pointers in all but four of his appearances at Kansas, illustrating both his feel for finding perimeter shots and his ability to convert them at a high rate.

The 19-year-old earned at least five trips to the free-throw line in half of his college outings and hit at least one 3-pointer in every game. Even on poor shooting nights, he was never fully shut out of the offense.

Peterson owns a quick release and consistently squares his shoulders to the basket, creating quality looks even while serving as the focal point of opposing defenses as a freshman.

NBA-Caliber Athleticism

Although his athleticism did not fully show up in college, Peterson projects as a more than capable athlete at the NBA level.

Like most guards, he should benefit from the NBA’s improved spacing. His ability to change speed and direction should make him difficult to cover even for professional defenders.

While Peterson had a few poster dunks, his athleticism is rooted more in body control — in the mold of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — than in gravity-defying finishes at the rim like Anthony Edwards.

The former five-star recruit rarely gets sped up. His elasticity and strength allow him to make difficult adjustments near the basket look easy with the ball in his hands.

Defensive Potential

Peterson was not a lockdown defender in college, but he showed stronger defensive instincts than most freshmen.

His effort and positioning produced solid on-ball results, while his well-timed help defense generated a high number of steals and deflections.

Because of the offensive load he carried at Kansas, Peterson was rarely asked to slow the opposing team’s top scorer. That assignment, however, could fall to him in high-leverage moments at the next level.

Simply put, defensive shortcomings will not force him off the floor in late-game situations, and he has the potential to grow into a high-level contributor on that end.

Areas for Improvement

Peterson entered the season as the projected No. 1 pick but lost that distinction due to repeated availability issues and uneven on-court results.

He battled full-body cramps and a hamstring injury throughout his college career, preventing him from finding a consistent rhythm with his teammates.

Although his box score numbers were solid, his fit within the offense rarely looked organic.

In limited appearances, Peterson often hunted shots. Even when they fell, it was difficult to argue that he consistently made Kansas a better team.

The Jayhawks went 9-2 without Peterson and only 15-9 when he played.

That lack of chemistry contributed to a troubling 1-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, as he averaged just 1.6 assists per game despite commanding significant on-ball attention.

Among the consensus top four prospects, Peterson was clearly the least impactful.

How Would Darryn Peterson Fit With the Jazz?

Despite a difficult freshman season, few prospects in this year’s draft fit the Jazz better than Peterson.

He could slide into the backcourt as a floor spacer and much-needed defender, while offering legitimate go-to scoring potential as he develops.

Peterson was not an outspoken leader in college, but with Keyonte George and Jaren Jackson Jr. already on the roster, Utah may not need a vocal centerpiece to build around.

The guard is not a can’t-miss prospect, particularly if his cramping issues persist, but he still offers more superstar upside than most players historically.

Regardless of the question marks, whichever team drafts Peterson will view him as one of its most valuable long-term assets.
