Keyonte George out at least two weeks with hamstring injury

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George will miss at least the next two weeks after suffering a grade two hamstring strain against the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

The Jazz guard was running back on defense midway through the third quarter, and as he jumped to contest a layup, he grabbed his right hamstring and ran directly to the team’s locker room

KSL Sports was able to confirm ESPN’s Tim Bontemps’ report that the guard would be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Keyonte George breakout season at risk

George, 22, had been one of the highlights of the Jazz’s fourth straight losing season, breaking out on a national stage in his third year in Utah.

The guard has averaged 23.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds while shooting a much-improved 45 percent from the floor and 37 percent from three in 54 appearances.

George had garnered significant buzz as the NBA’s Most Improved Player, but will fall short of the 65-game threshold required to win an end-of-season award by missing the Jazz’s seven-game slate over the next two weeks, with only 16 games left to play.

The Jazz are 16-38 in games when George started, and 4-8 when he didn’t.

George’s improvement was a key reason to end rebuild

George will lead a lineup next season that is expected to compete for a playoff spot in the West after the trade deadline acquisition of Jaren Jackson Jr.

Paired with Lauri Markkanen’s return to form, and George’s sudden rise to prominence at the point guard position, the Jazz felt confident acquiring the 26-year-old from the Memphis Grizzlies as they expedited their rebuilding process.

Walker Kessler is likely to re-sign with the team during restricted free agency, and with the evolution of Ace Bailey, and another high lottery pick this season, the Jazz should be one of the most talented young teams in the West.

The Jazz currently own a record of 20-46, the second-worst in the West, and the fifth-worst in the NBA overall.
