Utah Jazz Youth Makes Statement In Win Over Pacers

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz snapped their six-game losing streak with a 131-122 win over the Indiana Pacers.

Lauri Markkanen scored 27 points to lead a severely shorthanded Jazz roster that used only seven players after finalizing the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade shortly before tipoff.

Isaiah Collier responds after Walt Clayton Jr. trade

There was a real possibility that Isaiah Collier could have been traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.

To acquire Jackson Jr., the Jazz sent Memphis Kyle Anderson, Georges Niang, Taylor Hendricks, and rookie guard Walt Clayton Jr., who had been competing with Collier for reserve minutes all season.

Had the Grizzlies asked for Collier instead of Clayton Jr., the second-year guard might already be on a flight to Memphis, preparing for a different role in new home.

But that didn’t happen.

Memphis landed Clayton Jr., leaving Collier as the lone healthy option for point guard minutes while Keyonte George recovers from injury.

Collier’s showing against the Pacers could have the Grizzlies regretting their decision already.

The guard delivered a standout performance in Indiana, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 22 assists, committing only two turnovers while playing all 48 minutes. He also recorded three steals and five rebounds.

“I feel like we needed this as a team,” Collier said. “I needed this individually as well.”

The Jazz expect to win next season, and while they won’t skip steps in their rebuild, they also won’t allow any young player to slow progress if better options emerge.

Whether Collier can secure his role as the team’s go-to backup point guard remains uncertain, but his production in Indiana was a promising start.

Young players suddenly facing tougher competition next season

Along with Jackson Jr., the Jazz acquired Vince Williams Jr., John Konchar, and Jock Landale on Tuesday — veterans who could help the team next season if they remain on the roster.

Konchar is the only new Jazzman with a guaranteed contract next year. Williams Jr. has a $2.5 million team option, and Landale will be a free agent who could return as a backup center.

With the new additions — and another lottery pick likely arriving in June — minutes in next year’s rotation will be scarce, and none of the Jazz’s current reserves have secured a spot.

Keyonte George and Ace Bailey project as the starting backcourt, leaving Collier, Konchar, Williams Jr., Cody Williams, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Brice Sensabaugh battling for reserve roles.

Markkanen, Jackson Jr., and Walker Kessler will handle the majority of the frontcourt minutes, with Kyle Filipowski as the only reserve big under contract beyond this season. Safe to say, the Jazz will add more veteran depth this summer.

Coach Will Hardy typically uses a 10-man rotation, and with the starting five likely set, earning second-unit minutes will be challenging.

After three straight seasons in which opportunities were plentiful for young players, the 2026-27 campaign will be a true meritocracy. The final 31 games of this season may determine who plays — and who sits.
