LOGAN, Utah – Following a deflating loss to UNLV that dropped the Aggies out of the top 25, Utah State answered the bell with its most dominating conference game of the season, beating Nevada 90-69.

Utah State (16-2, 6-1) hosted the Nevada Wolfpack (11-7, 3-4) on Wednesday, January 22, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Ian Martinez hit seven of nine threes for 23 points, with Mason Falslev having an off-shooting night. Falslev finished with 11 assists and three rebounds to go with nine points.

Aubin Gateretse made 6-of-7 shots for 16 points, and Dexter Akanno added 15 points on five threes in 26 minutes.

First Half

Utah State opened slowly, falling behind 4-0 as they went without a point until Mason Falslev knocked down a pair of free throws with 17:22 left.

The Aggies trailed 11-7 at the first media timeout.

USU responded with a quick 6-0 run out of the timeout to grab a 13-11 lead.

Leading 20-18, a turnover and Deyton Albury’s alley-oop slam got the Spectrum crowd out of their seats. It was the second of back-to-back transition helpers for Falslev, a former Utah state champion QB at nearby Sky View.

Utah State’s full-court press was a problem for the Wolfpack throughout the game. Nevada committed 11 turnovers in the first 16 minutes of play. USU capitalized on Nevada’s carelessness to take a 37-28 lead with 4:17 left.

A Falslev to Drake Allen one-handed alley-oop slam followed by a three from Dexter Akanno extended the lead to ten late in the half.

Aubin Gateretse led the Aggies to a 47-38 halftime advantage with 12 points on 5-of-6 from the field. Akanno added nine, followed by eight from Ian Martinez. Falslev and Allen had five assists each.

Second Half

USU extended its lead with a 13-7 streak out of the break.

Minutes later, Martinez ignited an 8-3 run with a pair of threes as USU increased its lead to 66-47 with 14:26 left.

Later in the half, a trio of threes from Falslev and sophomore Tucker Anderson gave Utah State its largest lead of 77-55 with 7:54 left.

The Aggies held on for the 90-69 blowout win.
