SALT LAKE CITY – On Friday, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham joined DJ and PK, where he provided an unfortunate update on another quarterback.

It’s been a tough season on the injury front and Utah has suffered yet another loss.

Quarterback Sam Huard recently had a surgery that will remove him from consideration and leave him unavailable the rest of the season.

Sam Huard Done For Year

“Sam Huard had a surgery some time ago that ended his season,” Kyle Whittingham stated. “So, he’s physically unable to perform and is out for the rest of the season.”

This is rather unfortunate news, as Huard had been making progress recently. Following the Arizona State game, Huard was elevated to QB3 but seems to have had his surgery sometime after that.

After joining the program in the summer, Huard simply did not have enough time in the system to truly compete in the quarterback battle.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder landed at Utah after searching for a program that would provide him the best opportunity to showcase his ability at the power conference level.

The No. 3 ranked quarterback in the 2021 class, Huard was a former five-star prospect at Kennedy Catholic High School.

He came to Utah via the transfer portal from Cal Poly. There he started nine games and threw for 2,247 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions.

However, Huard wanted to return to the power conference level and found that opportunity at Utah.

He does have talent but just needed time to digest the playbook, but, unfortunately, the surgery removes him from the equation.

Isaac Wilson, Brandon Rose continue to battle

That has left Wilson and Rose as the two quarterbacks battling it out in practice during the bye week.

“They’re splitting reps this week and competing for the spot,” Whittingham said. “We’ve got a competition going on right now, we’ve got to get it settled by early next week.”

During the bye week, the team has practiced a few days and today will be the last big practice before the team gets some time off.

“We practiced Tuesday, Wednesday, we’ll go today, then give them a few days off, and then get back after it on Monday and by Monday we have to have the pecking order at quarterback,” Whittingham said.

However this shakes out, Utah doesn’t want to lose a competitive advantage as they do not plan to announce anything publicly before kickoff.

“We probably won’t announce that, there’s no reason to, it doesn’t offer any competitive advantage,” he said. “So, we won’t publicly announce it and then we’ll line up and play on Saturday.”
