SALT LAKE CITY – College basketball conference tournaments are canceling around the country due to the latest developments and spread of COVID-19.

Ten conferences announced the cancelations of their tournaments. Pac-12, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten, Big 12, American Athletic Conference (AAC), SEC, Big East, Conference-USA, Sun Belt, Big Sky, Big West, and the WAC have all decided to cancel their league tournaments that reward automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

The Pac-12’s statement on canceling the conference tournament and all activities in the Pac-12 Conference.

The Pac-12 Conference has made the decision to cancel the remainder of the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament and all Pac-12 sports competitions and Pac-12 Championship events, effective immediately, until further notice.  This decision has been made in consultation with our member universities in an effort to limit the spread of the virus and in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes, campus personnel, working and event personnel, and all those who attend Pac-12 events.

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

The CDC does not recommend wearing a facemask respirator to protect yourself from coronavirus unless a healthcare professional recommends it.
