Dixie State Splits Rivalry Road Trip With Win Over Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The Dixie State Trailblazers picked up a 93-89 bounce back win over Utah Valley in the second game of the Old Hammer rivalry, getting the split.

Dixie State received a massive performance from Hunter Schofield with 31 points and 7 rebounds in their win over Utah Valley. Frank Staine added 19 points, including a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Cameron Gooden chipped in 14 points.

For Utah Valley, Trey Woodbury led them with 27 points. Fardaws Aimaq was a monster, recording 18 points and 25 rebounds. He had 12 offensive and 13 defensive rebounds. J.J. Overton contributed 17 points before fouling out in the second half.

It was a very tightly contested first half in Orem as Dixie State’s largest lead was three points. Utah Valley’s biggest advantage was 7 points with 7 minutes left in the half. DSU had a 47-46 lead at the break.

The Trailblazers shot 51 percent (17-33) from the field, 36 percent (4-11) from the three-point line and made all nine of their free throw attempts. Two players were already in double figures for Dixie State. Hunter Schofield dropped 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Frank Staine added 13 points and 4 assists, while making all 7 free throw attempts.

UVU was productive on the offensive end as well in the first half, making 57 percent of their field goal attempts. J.J. Overton was the only Wolverine in double figures with 10 points. Trey Woodbury had 9 points at the half and Fardaws Aimaq was busy on the glass, with 8 points and 13 boards in 18 minutes.

The second half was much of the same as far as how close it was. Dixie State outscored Utah Valley 46-43 in the final 20 minutes to pick up the win.

Dixie State will play their final five regular season games at home beginning with a two-game series against Tarleton State. The series will begin on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. MST and will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.

Utah Valley dropped their record to 7-8 overall and 5-2 in WAC play. They will hit the road and will start a two-game series against New Mexico State on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20. Tip-off times have not been announced.
