Former Jazz Players, Opponents Reflect On Memories Of Mark Eaton

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah Jazz players and opponents joined Thurl Bailey on “Thurl Talk” to reflect on memories of the late Mark Eaton.

According to police, Mark Eaton was found unconscious on Long Rife Road in Summit County after going on an evening bike ride. The former center was transported to the hospital where he later passed away on May 28.

One of Eaton’s teammates is Thurl Bailey, who hosts the podcast “Thurl Talk.” Bailey was joined by many former teammates and opponents as they all talked about the memories they had of Eaton either on or off the court.

John Stockton, Jazz Legend

Stockton played with Eaton from the time he entered the league in 1984 until the big man retired in 1994.

“You see a big man walking over to you like that and you kind of expect him to be big and awkward, and all the stereotypes that come with being big,” Stockton said. “He was none of those things. He was warm, a gentleman, kind, confident, welcoming.”

Bobby Hansen, Former Jazzman

Hansen was teammates with Eaton from 1983-90.

“He was like that Wasatch range behind you on the east side of Salt Lake City,” Hansen said. “You knew he had your back whether it was out on the street or wherever you were. The big fella was there.”

Eddie Johnson, NBA Veteran

Johnson played in the NBA from 1981-99.

“He blocked my shot more than anybody in the history of my career, it’s not even close,” Johnson said. “God took a really good one in Mark Eaton, he was making a difference.”
